Forest Hills Northern has decided to implement a new phone rule in an attempt to improve grades and take away distractions from students who are eager to learn.

In this new rule, teachers will be designate whether each class is red, yellow, or green, which will dictate phone use during that hour. Red means no phone use, yellow is intermediate use but phones away to start, and green for unlimited use.

Students will be given a pouch that all teachers have as an out if they want to rid the distraction completely. Also mentioned in this rule: students will not be allowed to use their phones during times that they’re in the hallway.

Noah Blase, a senior, was less than thrilled with this rule. “I think this rule is childish. Teachers should be able to implement their policy on phones class to class based on maturity and overall success.”

He also explained that this update of policy angered him because he has been succeeding in his classes since he started at Northern. “I have a 3.965 cumulative G.P.A. I feel as if I should be able to make the decision on whether or not I’m on my phone as long as I succeed.”

Mr. Gillette, an English teacher had mixed feelings about the new rule. “I think it’s fine and I think it’s helpful for consistency for students to be focused and not on their phones.”

He was excited about the potential of the rule but at the same time he believes strongly that it’s the teacher’s job to engage the student.
