The ninth annual Gymnastics on the Grand, hosted by Grand Rapids Gymnastics, took place on Friday, November 30 with over 2,000 gymnasts competing.

The meet, held at the DeVos Place, consisted of both girls and boys gymnastics and featured special guests 2004 Olympic gymnast Carly Patterson and two time Olympian Jake Dalton.

Gymnasts from all over Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and Canada came to compete with the best of the best. One event that made Gymnastics on the Grand different from other meets was the event finals that happened on Saturday night. The top five gymnasts from levels 7-10 competed on all four events for the title of Best on that event.

Gymnastics on the Grand also had a unique twist because it also hosted a collegiate club gymnastics meet. Teams such as Grand Valley, Michigan State, and Ohio State showed people what they could do out on the competition floor.

The thing that made Gymnastics on the Grand so special was the Area 11 Special Olympic gymnastics team. Saturday afternoon, right before event finals, the team took the floor to showcase routines they had been working very hard on. The gymnasts started with graceful and elegant floor exercise routines and then went to the balance beam where they showed everyone their impeccable balancing skills. The team finished on vault and concluded the meet at the medal ceremony presented by Carly Patterson and Jake Dalton. This special event brought tears to people’s eyes because of the joy that it put on the gymnasts faces as they competed.

With Gymnastics on the Grand all wrapped up, many are anxiously waiting to see what’s in store for next year.

“It’s the meet your team will be talking about for the rest of the season,” said Kathleen Wright.
