A botanist stranded on Mars, completely isolated, has to find a way to survive with a limited amount of resources on a planet where nothing grows. Most people will find that storyline intriguing, but what ultimately makes a film great is how the movie delivers that narrative, and The Martian simply did not accomplish this.

The opening sequence of the movie pulls you right into the action with a sandstorm occurring while a crew of astronauts are exploring the grainy surface of mars. The protagonist (Matt Damon) is struck violently by debris, and the crew assume he is dead. They make a difficult choice to leave without him to save their own lives.

As they ascend in the ship, there is a shot of the crew in grief of what just took place and this particular scene revealed the two major flaws that would transpire throughout the film, pacing and character development. How is the audience supposed to sympathize with these characters if we have no idea who they are? While the progression of the story was quick to begin the film, it moved redundantly slow throughout the middle part of the movie and never really found a middle ground.

The film also didn’t dig into the human aspect and psychology of being in complete solitude, in a distant place away from society. It  veered away from that and was more of just a story about a guy stuck on Mars not too fazed with his dire situation. The movie had its strong points, most notably the humor that was showcased throughout the duration of the film which gave the audience some comic relief, even if it felt forced at times. You also have give credit to the beautiful rendering of the Mars landscape; it felt like you were really watching a movie that was shot on Mars. Other than that, The Martian fails to have any lasting impact on the audience with its sporadic pacing, subpar acting, and unimaginative dialogue. I’d give it a solid six out of ten.
